Ideally Located in the Heart of the Keys

Marathon is located in the heart of the Florida Keys and its essence lies in being historically known as a fishing community. Now it is also popular for its beaches, including the top-rated Sombrero Beach, and its easy boat access to both the Gulf and Ocean. Fishing and diving continue to be the focus of residents’ activities. Marathon also offers opportunity for biking, walking, or running: from a paved bike path at its eastern end, to the wooded trails within Curry Hammock State Park, to the Old Seven Mile Bridge pedestrian path. Sunset viewed from the bridge cannot be beat, and many locals frequent the spot at day’s end. The dog-friendly Coco Plum beach is another favorite among residents.

Marathon Neighborhoods

Marathon Florida real estate buyers have many neighborhoods to choose from. Some of Marathon’s most desirable neighborhoods include Coco Plum and Sombrero Beach, both located on the ocean side away from the city center, each with its own beautiful beach. Enjoyable outdoor activities, fishing, diving, and beaches are easily accessed from all real estate in Marathon.

Facts & History

The city of Marathon got its name from its historical importance in the building of the Florida East Coast Railroad. Railroad workers housed in the area and on Pigeon Key worked night and day to complete the railway complaining that the project was “getting to be a real Marathon.” Initially used as the name of the local station along the railroad, Marathon later became the name of the city once it developed. The city of Marathon is stretched across several islands in the middle of the Florida Keys. It extends from the west end of Tom’s Harbor Bridge (Mile Marker 61) to the east end of the 7 Mile Bridge (Mile Marker 47), excluding the area encompassed by the city of Key Colony Beach. Among the islands of the city are Boot Key, Knight’s Key, Vaca Key, Crawl Key, Fat Deer Key, Long Point Key, and Grassy Key.
